Marketplace image rules change by platform and category, but the underlying production workflow can remain stable. The goal is to create one trustworthy master set, then export channel-specific versions without repeatedly rebuilding the same product images.
Create a source folder per product
Keep original photos separate from processed files. A simple structure is:
SKU/
originals/
transparent-masters/
enhanced-masters/
marketplace-a/
marketplace-b/This protects the source, prevents accidental overwriting, and makes future platform changes easier to handle.
Choose a consistent hero angle
The first image should make the product recognizable at thumbnail size. Use a repeatable angle, similar camera distance, and similar amount of surrounding space across the catalog.
Consistency helps customers compare products and makes the store appear deliberate rather than assembled from unrelated images.
Create a clean master before platform exports
Remove or standardize the background, correct obvious capture problems, and preserve a high-quality master at a useful resolution. Do not start by compressing the image to one platform's final size.
For products that need multiple layouts, a transparent PNG master is especially flexible. It can be placed on white, a branded color, or a promotional composition without repeating background removal.
Use enhancement conservatively
Correct low contrast, mild softness, or color cast, but preserve accurate product color and texture. Marketplace images are sales assets, but they are also representations of what the customer will receive.
Keep before-and-after versions and approve a small sample before processing the entire catalog.
Crop for the channel, not the source
A square listing, a vertical social card, and a wide storefront banner require different composition. Use the same master, but adjust crop and spacing for each destination.
Do not stretch an image to fit a ratio. Crop, extend the canvas, or redesign the layout instead.
Standardize naming and metadata
Use names that connect the file to a SKU, angle, and channel:
SKU123-front-marketplace-a-2000.jpg
SKU123-detail-01-marketplace-a-2000.jpgAvoid stuffing filenames with promotional keywords. Clear operational naming is more useful to a team and reduces upload mistakes.
Export to actual requirements
Check the marketplace's current documentation for supported format, aspect ratio, minimum and maximum dimensions, background rules, and file-size limits. Requirements can differ by category and can change over time.
Export a dedicated delivery version rather than sacrificing the master.
Run a mobile-first quality check
Most shoppers will first see a small image. Review the thumbnail and product page on a phone-sized viewport. Confirm that the item remains recognizable, occupies enough of the frame, and does not depend on tiny text.
Keep an audit trail
For a small catalog, filenames and folders may be enough. For larger work, record the source filename, processed version, date, tool, and destination. This makes it easier to replace an image, investigate a mismatch, or reproduce the style for new products.
A disciplined image workflow saves time every time a marketplace changes its requirements or a product needs a new campaign layout.
